Beauty and the Beast

We are delighted to invite you to ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Our 2024 musical will be a visual and auditory spectacular, with students from Y7 to Sixth Form singing, dancing, playing in the band and assisting with costumes, set painting and props. This funny, moving musical about romance and redemption boasts such brilliant numbers as ‘Gaston’ and ‘Be Our Guest’.

Tickets are on ParentPay at £10.00 for adults, £5 for students/staff.

Jack Petchey Speakout Challenge Grand Final

On Monday 8 July, Halima 10T took part in the Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Final at the Cambridge Theatre.

She was one of the 15 finalists of 33,000 young people who took part in the competition. 

“It was an absolutely surreal experience; given that being able to perform on a West End stage to an entire audience of strangers about something that resonated so hard with you isn’t an opportunity that comes around often. I met so many incredible people, the majority being those who had also come to share their speeches and their own individual passions. We had several workshops to prepare ourselves as well as become more comfortable performing to strangers; there was also an element of regaining a sense of familiarity with our speeches as well as our own voices. I gained lots of tips but the one that I kept internalising was the 5Ss (Stride, stand, smile, speak, stay); the competition started at 7 and the evening was spent listening to the different performances and gaining perspectives on topics that I hadn’t ever considered before. I had a super amazing time. - Halima 10T"

Jazz Workshop

On Wednesday, a special transition workshop took place. Pupils from the Brecknock and Torriano federation came together with the junior jazz band for an afternoon of playing. Led by Rod Arran, pupils had the opportunity to work together, learning songs collaboratively, such as Cold Duck Dance and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.

Parents enjoyed a short concert at the end, where all students had the chance to consolidate their work and give a great performance.

The music department would like to thank Daisy Coole who runs junior jazz and Andrerw Osborn who is music coordinator at Torriano.

Annual Alumni Summer Tea Party

On Saturday we held our annual alumni Summer Tea Party where we celebrated the life of CSG ex-Head Teacher, Carol Handley who died recently.

Born in 1929, Carol was a dedicated classicist who studied Latin and Ancient Greek at University College, London.  In September 1956, she began her long and illustrious career at CSG as a classics teacher. In 1971, she became acting head teacher and was soon appointed to the post permanently.  She remained Head Teacher until her retirement in April 1985.

Carol was at the helm during an especially turbulent time for CSG.  In 1973, in what was soon to become an event of national importance just like the RAAC concrete saga was last year, the hall roof collapsed and much of the 1950s building on the site had to be reinforced.  The culprit here was a material called high alumina cement.   Whilst remedial building works took place, many classrooms were out of use and lessons had to be rescheduled in other schools or local facilities.  The 1970s was also the era when schools across the country were changing from grammar and secondary modern schools to comprehensives.  There were plans to close CSG or merge it with other local schools.    It is thanks to Carol’s relentless opposition to these plans that the school is still thriving today.  It was also Carol who was responsible for abolishing the school uniform, a bold step at the time, which was reported in national newspapers.  In the 1980s, Carol also masterminded the building of the gym and sixth form house.

At Saturday’s event we were joined by Carol’s cousin, Charles Peeples.  He spoke fondly of Carol, telling us about her family life.

Artichoke Trust's FREE Arts Summer School

Artichoke Trust are organising a FREE week-long arts summer school for 11 – 16-year-old students from low-income backgrounds this August. We are keen for this opportunity to be accessed by those who would benefit the most.

Artichoke Trust are running another FREE Arts Summer School, jam-packed with fun and creative workshops. A fantastic opportunity for young people to learn new skills, find hidden talents or simply give something new a go!

In our 5- day program, participants will have the chance to try different artistic mediums, including collage, painting, drawing, model making and much more, through a series of workshops with professional London-based artists. Our summer school is the perfect space for young people to express themselves, explore creative ideas, and to meet new people!

Additional activities include stop-motion animation with Art Play, circus skills with the National Centre for Circus Arts and a tour and workshop at Whitechapel Gallery.
